History Of Udaipur

The Romantic city had been the capital of Mewar rulers from centuries.  An interesting legend is associated with the foundation of this city. Maharana Udai Singh, the founder, was hunting. Maharana Udai Singh happened to meet a holy sage when he was on his hunting expedition in the Aravalli Hills.

The Sage counseled the King to establish a kingdom in the fertile valley that would be well-protected by the elevated Aravalli Hills. Subsequently, Maharana Udai Singh laid the foundation stone of Udaipur in 1557 A.D. Initially Chittorgarh was the capital of Mewar, but it was shifted to Udaipur because it was constantly attacked by the invaders & the Mughals. In the year 1567- 68, to avoid the danger of Emperor Akbar the whole kingdom was shifted to Udaipur.

A peace treaty was later in between the Mughals and the Rajput’s. When the Mughal Empire started to weakened the Rana’s & Maharanas reasserted their independence & recaptured most of Mewar except Chittor. In the year 1818, Mewar became a princely state with Udaipur as its capital.
